How do FHE practitioners deal with the fact that whenever you mention "homomorphic" anything, stupid people on the internet act like it has something to do with homosexuality? Is there some other term that we're supposed to use? Use "FHE" without ever unrolling the acronym? Something else?

(I should mention this is *much* less of a problem on farcaster than on the other app)

If you think that’s bad, imagine being an anthropologist tweeting about homo erectus

Cryptography in general is very prone to lean taxonomically in naming conventions, or using the initials of the inventors of approaches. I’m not sure how to solve that problem, but it's singularly the reason why so many people feel so scared to learn even some aspect of it, on top of the math.

What if we all collectively decided to start calling it "Super Gay Encryption" instead?

strong parallels to how the term "crypto" (for onchain assets) has made it harder to talk about cryptography topics amongst no-coiners, there's just a knee-jerk blanket rejection of everything following the moment the word comes out of your mouth, they can't help themselves. listeners' fault tho, not the speakers' ofc.

(For the rest of us: Homomorphic encryption (FHE) is a cryptographic method that allows computations to be performed on encrypted data without decrypting it first. This means that sensitive data can be processed securely, preserving privacy)

Just roll with it. Either they’re trolling and you can safely ignore, or they’re out of their depth and maybe they’ll learn something.

Either ignore or go with “no-homomorphic” I think the “no-homo” prefix somehow makes anything ok in their eyes?

That just happens with any word/term that starts with "homo"... :( So far, the only success I could find is to ignore those that can't put down the d**k jokes when focus is needed.
