What are the "DePIN" projects that people think are most likely to actually work? It feels like the category is a new name for something that's been around for a decade (StorJ, various decentralized ubers...) but has never gotten off the ground? So what's the bull case for why it will get off the ground now?

Helium has deals with T-Mobile iirc so as far as DePIN goes it is probably the most promising, though it seems to be marketed as merely an American low-cost option

https://warpcast.com/july/0xfdc33e31 We want to build a machine that's going to enable anyone to build DePIN projects themselves, instead of having to wait for the hardware manufacturers to catch up. A HW/OS that's built for Ethereum, what would it look like if it could sense in the real world?

My only guess is AI agents AI agents don't have an identity in the 'real world' so they can't automatically consume services like AWS/GCP They can consume services from DePIN though like storage (IPFS/Arweave) or rendering services (Render). So it opens up internet services to those without a human identity

FOAM’s @foamspace progress with bringing Proof of Location to Ethereum is very exciting to follow. They recently shared their demo of Proof of Location on mobile with the use of their new wireless user device. 🫧 Besides Proof of Location, FOAM enables Ethereum interactivity without an internet connection!

I would say /dimo, is one of the best, but they still lack a good offer of services outside of the US.

I'm very excited about the potential @july and @faust's ROC had! and I think the proof of location primitive that @foamspace is building will fill a gap that's been missing in the space. Verifiable real world sensor data onchain is the bull case imo

Yep DePIN is not new it has been around for a long while, it’s just that this name seems to finally umbrella lots of projects. The bull case is by using crypto we can enter new industries that before were almost impossible to enter due to large capital requirements

Other than a different financial structure (distributed capex allows deployment of infrastructure without huge funding), I believe that some of these projects that involve sensors, will provide an new source of truth about how we see the world.

Global GPU demand is probably the strongest narrative for decentralized compute networks today. These same networks will also be well positioned to offer verifiable compute down the line, which will be necessary as models like Sora improve.

I only found out the other day that FOAM was still alive. Good to see.

Infrastructure networks trend towards consolidation and centralization (AWS, ISPs, cellular). DePIN networks have: 1) coordination/interoperability between decentralized actors 2) make open/decentralized networks economically competitive The model and the promise is similar to networks like Ethereum.

Hivemapper is a really interesting project. I’ve had a Dashcam on my car now for a couple months and it’s gamified driving while also earning.

TPM (& zkSNARK ASIC) production & sampling. if there was a credibly neutral TEE, imagine the other phenomena that could go onchain.
