How do layer 2s really differ from execution sharding? https://vitalik.eth.limo/general/2024/05/23/l2exec.html

TLDR; ▫️L2s and sharding in Ethereum use ZK-SNARKs and DAS for verification. ▫️L2s offer diverse execution environments and flexible security but face coordination challenges like token transfers and wallet support. ▫️They foster innovation, balancing creativity and security, unlike L1-centric models.

Vitalik, sorry this is unrelated but I believe Layer 3s are truly where users, activity and volume will flow to eventually. e.g Degen L3 chain is the only chain that competes with Solana's speed, tx cost, potential use cases. I think L3s outperform L2s entirely this year. Your thoughts?

Only 1 in 10 active weekly Ethereum users are also active on Arbitrum. That's surprisingly low. Why do you think this is the case? Dune query: https://dune.com/queries/3752807/6311795?window_length_t6c1ea=7&days_in_scope_t6c1ea=30

The technical differences and similarities between Layer 2 solutions and execution sharding. Both approaches aim to scale blockchains by utilizing large amounts of computation and data bandwidth.

L2 solutions are protocols built on top of a blockchain (Layer 1, or L1) to improve its scalability and efficiency. They process transactions off the main chain, reducing the load on L1.

That's amazing! The vision and idea is super clear and all examples in the article are great - l2s = sharding; - l2s - different execution environments with own rules allowing builders to experiment; - making sharding on l1 introduces centralisation risks; - the main challenge for l2 centric roadmap - coordination;
