Hypothetically, would you rather have: 1. AI is not delayed, but the strongest AI, 10 years ahead of everyone else, is in the hands of a single very powerful US government agency 2. All AI delayed by 10 years

3. None of the above, because 2 will just end in 1 - the US government doesn't play by anyone's rules, including their own

1 to all your question Very Powerful AI will be the Roger Bannister four-minute-mile moment: people will realize what's possible, everyone accelerates, minimizing the 10-year gap.

1. although i donโ€™t see it as a plausible outcome today: gpt4 is 1 year ahead to its closest competitor claude open-source models are at worst 2 years behind gpt4. the general trend is more towards reducing that gap.

Do you really think regulation could slow AI by a decade? What do you mean by โ€œUS government agencyโ€? An intelligence agency / defense contractor or a tech company like google or openai? Those waters already muddy? My sense is irrespective of any regs, AI will be doing everything and more in <5 years.

2. We donโ€™t trust the US Fed with money, hence crypto. (Ok Fed is not technically government but for all intents and purposes.) But we do trust them with an AI with the ability to potentiate all the data they collect, manipulate media with deep fakes and ossify existing power structures? No, thanks

Wowow even phrased this way some people prefer 1, the monopoly. You should also try with replacing the US agency with Chinese.
