Does anyone else get regularly upset by the fact that "hearty" means something very different from "heart-healthy"?

Isn’t English so charming? I have an insane amount of respect for anyone learning it as a second (or more) language.

when it comes to food ‘Hearty’ basically just means calorically dense which would have been heart healthy when food scarcity was more of an issue in olde England. otherwise it basically just means warm and vivacious, also heart healthy!

I think hearty food warms the metaphorical heart. Hearty people have a lot of that metaphorical heart and are therefore resilient. So hearty DOES have to do with the heart, just not the heart you wish it did.

I can't find in the comments the way I use it. I use it like a "hearty vegetable stew" or a "hearty steak and potatoes".

Not specifically this but the inconsistencies strewn throughout the English language. Tough language to learn secondarily

the conceptual meanings are pretty similar. heart-health derives from a hearty life. hearty meals with hearty company. time spent in hearty pursuits and hearty discussions. a hearty disposition. you can eat well and exercise etc but your heart will be weaker without the above.

On this topic, calling the things that make you thin "fats" was perhaps the most harmful misnomer in history.
