I actually think the growth of app layer is exactly the time that good social philosophy is needed *most*. Analogy: imagine that C++ had been made by a totalitarian racist fascist. Would it be a worse language? Probably not. C++ is general purpose, there isn't much surface for bad social philosophy to wreck it (or good social philosophy to improve it). Ethereum L1 is not quite in that position: someone who doesn't believe in decentralization would not add light clients, or FOCIL, or (good forms of) account abstraction; someone who doesn't mind energy waste would not spend half a decade moving to PoS... But the EVM opcodes might have been roughly the same either way. So Ethereum is perhaps 50% general-purpose. Apps are ~80% special purpose. What apps you build depends heavily on what ideas you have of what ethereum apps (and ethereum as a whole) are there to do for the world. And so having good ideas on this topic out there becomes crucially important. https://x.com/owocki/status/1911160442728419681

Can you give an example of what you think is is good social philosophy and bad social philosophy?

the problem with “philosophically” built apps is that they only appeal to people with the same values. mainstream users don’t share cypherpunk values, and app builders having to educate potential users is a losing strategy.

The app layer is where values get encoded into user experience. You can’t abstract away intent when you’re building for people. Philosophy doesn’t just belong, it shapes the roadmap.

The 'invisible hand' eschews judgements such as a "good social framework", and the "good intentions" or lack thereof of developers in a given app (or political system etc.) in the long-run likely has little bearing on the outcome (bubbles, fraud etc. short-term harmful, but in the long-run may help fortify systems)

This perfectly explains why infra investments aren’t enough — the values driving app builders will determine if Ethereum’s principles scale or get diluted. Culture has to be a part of capital allocation strategy at the app layer.

For the love of God please focus on positive things. We don't need more negativity price same as it was 7 years ago. You refuse to listen to your community. Was in eth ico. Solo stalker Genesis. All my friends are gone now. Nobody left. I'm on the cliff.

do you believe values can be built in apps reliably? I mean having values as a developer and actually implementing them in tech are not the same. Getting from one to another is non-trivial

I’ve been building on ethereum since I firts landed onchain, 5 years ago. And even in the bad times where all the artist were moving their mints to Sol, Tez, or any other bs to follow the wave and pump their bags, i just confidently and relentlessly chose ETH. Because it always felt like the “cool kids” league for me, and i still perceive it like the most prestigious place to mint my art and build something around it. And this place pushed me so much out of my comfort zone that I even starte vibe coding apps, revolving around real art, with a real purpose and story to tell. bottom line is that I won’t be where I am rn if it wasn’t for ETH, and this chain is the place to be. Regardless of anything, because there will always be a bit of bad in the good, and bit of good in the bad.
