one could argue that bitcoin has been corrupted from its original intention, to some degree.

I would challenge that claim.  I consider the attracting of capital to be one of the major reasons why blockchains have been corrupted away from their original ethos.  This has, perhaps, happened slower than traditional capital markets but I think it is incorrect to say that it isn't happening.
