Biathlon is a winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. It originated as a training exercise for Norwegian soldiers and became an Olympic sport in 1960. In biathlon competitions, athletes ski over a designated distance, and at certain intervals, they stop to shoot at targets located either in a prone or standing position. The shooting segments require a high level of concentration and control, as athletes must slow their heart rates to ensure accuracy. Penalties are incurred for missed targets, either in the form of extra distance added to the skiing portion or time penalties. Biathlon events include individual races, sprint races, pursuit races, and relays, and they are popular in countries with a strong tradition of winter sports, such as Norway, Russia, Germany, and Sweden. 0 reply
