The majority of my training consists of a lot of yang energy, so I make sure to balance it out with my version of yin like energy. It may not seem like it but I’m quite a yogi too. During lockdown I was doing 90 mins almost everyday, and then actually qualified with a yoga sports science cert! (Included a 200hr YTT). I truly find it grounding and as a form of moving meditation where I can go with the flow or how I feel; rather than my usual training where I quite strictly follow a programme. Make sure you find your yin for your Yang ☯️

What are your thoughts on weight training contracting and tightening muscles vs yoga that elongates and stretches them Is there any optimal balance between the two? Like alternating ying with yang week to week?

I think like anything, variety is key. If you only stick to one type of movement then you'll only ever train that one element. I totally understand that when you are learning something new you sort of need to put that thing as a focus i.e. Oly lifting/powerlifting to get good at it and skill....but then nothing hurts to do one of the things for 20% of the time. These two things are more similar than you think. Bodybuilding/weightlifting is basically loaded stretching, you rip the muscle through a stretch to rebuild, have a look at bench press for the pec major when done full range of motion on the eccentric portion. The only thing I would say is, you want to be smart for WHEN you do yoga vs weightlifting. I wouldn't recommend yoga directly before a weightlifting session, but rather say once a week or morning/evening as a separate session depending on your goals and needs. I hope that makes sense!
