good design is one of the highest leverage things for a company, and yet i still go to openai to create mediocre graphics and brand assets i think the challenge is that it's very difficult to articulate visual identity at the early stages, and design requires as much iteration and discovery as product thoughts?

Thoughts and facts 😅 Well, that’s just the problem... Good designs have become inconvenient and uncomfortable for a market and times of speed and immediacy, because good designs last; and if they last, they don't have to be constantly renewed (which is different from iterating them) and that sometimes this is not convenient. The discovery and research phase rarely gets the share it deserves. You have to reach very big and important milestones that accumulate huge budgets to be able to dedicate proper resources to them. But there are ways to hack the system... and that is by giving value to the design process and the team that develops it. It's also important to develop an openness to being shown things you hadn't thought of before. When this happens the efficiency of the design and the design process increases and thus the outcome. Another important aspect is to see designers (or design technicians, as I prefer to call myself and which leaves egos out) as guides, tools or helpers with a purpose.

I speak from the experience of design, branding and digital product, but I have also worked in the physical realm. Even if we live in the world where you can find almost all the information in the world in real time, not everything is DIY-able at every moment.
