complex. most of the time the self-acknowledged punks are just Sid Vicious whereas the etiquette-clueless turn out to be either the Slits or Strummer. According to every grifter, they themselves are McLaren and Westwood though.

Some corners of it definitely have some heritage. From the DIY community-building ethos, to more specific diaspora. One anecdote: The guy who got me into punk at age 10 self identifies as a degen today, which blew my mind. Old punks are around.
