Audiophiles: how is the market for quality sound systems doing? Do people still buy living room amp/speaker systems and attach to TVs? Feels like everyone just gives up and uses headphones or simple built-in speakers on TVs/computers/phones these days. And afaik speaker tech hasn’t gotten much smaller physically.

In the 90s people were excited about Bose and other high-end speakers that were shrinking form factors the way LCDs and LEDs shrank video devices but afaik there are no discontinuous tech shifts, it’s just better mechanical design and some adaptive electronics.

I have two JBL studio monitors in my office I got back in 2019. pretty happy with them & don't see myself upgrading anytime soon. for nearly a decade before ipods, I was using wireless headphones at the gym. the latest ipod pros have been better than any sennheiser or shure product I've ever used for exercising.

On the business end I am seeing more and more “hifi” concepts - intimate listening bars that serve cocktails and apps and invest heavily in awesome sound systems and good DJs

Wouldn't describe myself as an audiophile. Fwiw using Sonos Beam attached to TV, and a stereo group of HomePod minis in another room

Feel like, in the end, convenience wins all such battles. Used to have a setup, now just AirPods and HomePods

the high end market shrunk significantly in the early 2000s and has sort of stayed small. still into amps + bookshelf + record player stack the mid rage converted into wireless speaker systems and now buys sonos the low end market doesn't buy audio (just listens on headphones)

Home audio stuff is an area where I definitely prefer vintage + plus a cheap bluetooth receiver. I recently went online looking for a good set of bookshelf speakers... eventually found myself in mid-aged guy's home with more than 500 different 'pieces' of audio; speakers, amps, turntables, etc. Was surreal.

Get a Syng Cell alpha. It’s epic. Maybe get 3 if you can afford it.

Have been using the same KRK Rokit 5 monitors for 10+ years and I’m shocked at how perfect they still sound to me. If these died today, I’d probably buy the same ones. I enjoy using them with PCs + laptops. My experience with headphones has been the complete opposite. They break or wear out very fast.

I’ve been investing in electrostatic headphones. Chains you to the desk but when I am there for long hours anyway so I thought I might as well take advantage of the best sound I can get.

I finally was able to try Dolby Atmos titles on Apple Music (didn’t have the right HDMI cables earlier) Mind blown.
