Cursor might be a good alternative to VS Code. Has a good integration with the LLMs and you can literally chat with/about a codebase without leaving the environment https://www.cursor.com/

Do you have a replacement in mind for Roam or is it just an open question? I lazily look around now and then. My main complaint is it's more or less unusable on mobile but that hasn't been a blocker in practice as I either send my self slack messages or take voice memos on the chatgpt app

If you're looking at VSCode I would suggest https://vscodium.com/ It's a FOSS fork and works just as well for me. I haven't noticed any difference after switching from VSCode
