Reddit is one of those forums I’m impressed by and am glad exists but have never been even slightly attracted to as a place to hang out. I wonder why 🤔 When I land there via Google I’m invariably satisfied by the results but not inclined to stay

I avoided reddit for a long time because I didn't understand how it is structured and how it was different than other similar services warly in ita cohort. Eventually I found (and I think this is key) small enough niche communities that I had relevant questions to ask and thoughtful comments to post.

tbh, it‘s very toxic to post there. You really have to commit yourself to the in-group, otherwise you won‘t stand a chance.

I think any platform that has a high culture barrier is harder to get into because you have to grok the culture or participate in the culture, and that's a big barrier to entry.

Reddit excels in niches - but it has millions of them. We after all are just one niche. So, large part of it is irrelevant to us. Friction to consume on Reddit is higher than a feed like in twitter or farcaster - that is easy to curate and digest.

I tend to come/go depending on interests. Great for TV shows + discussions. Great when you are planning a new game.

Is it the poor/basic UX or a very unpredictable quality of comments that puts you off?

Same & I’ve also wondered why that is. I’ve tried to stay involved, found subreddits focused on things I’m interested in, but still haven’t been inclined to stay. can’t imagine Reddit has more trollish anon accounts than twitter, but something about them turn me off more. Maybe it’s the absolute absence of

Wittiest comments on the internet live in Reddit, worth it just for that. I found my usage spiked when I added communities I was truly passionate about.

reddit is the digital analogue of a happy hour. if you’re comfortable sitting at a bar with strangers for hours at a time, socializing, it’s a shoe that fits very comfortably. think of it as Cheers with a cast of millions and lots of repeat characters

Agreed. I’ve mostly been satisfied with what I get when I’m looking into a niche/specific subreddit but after that burst of “hmm, wow, interesting”, the moment is gone and I don’t feel included to be on there any longer 🤔

I use it for a couple of niche interests (the city I live in, r/Cocktails, couple of other hobby things) but it always annoys me it’s not Usenet. Because Usenet was a) universal, b) had better structure and c) had a FAQ culture a million times better than Reddit.
