I think it's time to declare that the paywalled web is its own distinct climatic zone, distinct from both public web and cozyweb. What should we call it?

Substack has democratized paywalls properly. Patreon tried and didn't quite pull it off. Instead, they ended up creating an audience-capture trap zone. While only a few major newspapers and magazines had effective paywalls, it was more like industrial parks. Now it's a proper ecology.
