ENS is an open-source, permissionless protocol that anyone can build on. Teams like @ensvision and @godid have built secondary marketplaces, and dozens of communities have sprung up, like 10KClub, Pokemon, Pre-Punk, Ethmoji, Arabic + Spanish clubs, among many others.

ENS Labs is the dev shop that created ENS in 2017, originally with a grant from the Ethereum Foundation. Labs' employees work on the core protocol and the manager app, http://app.ens.domains, as well as provide broad support. ENS Labs is funded by the DAO treasury.

Governance concerns and proposals are discussed at discuss.ens.domains. This approach ensures that ENS remains responsive to the needs and desires of the communities who are engaged in governance. Renewal fees from names go to the DAO treasury, which funds the ecosystem via grants and streams to multiple dev shops.

ENS bridges web2 & web3 by now allowing you to gaselessly import DNSSEC enabled DNS domains. This means your .com can send and receive payments just like your .eth! ENS is constantly evolving to make the decentralized web more accessible and user friendly.

While .eth is the most recognizable part of ENS, the protocol is so much more. Users can register .eth names at http://ens.app or on many secondary marketplaces. These domain names are specifically registered on the Ethereum blockchain using the .eth top-level domain.
