This is called conflict of interest. When every bot is paying you $5 a year, you are definitely not going to get rid of them. Don't blame the "consumer". Filtering out every single new user by default is just dumb. It makes it almost impossible for new users without a social circle already on FC to start out.

Genuine question - what do you think we should be doing instead?

Be honest about how many real users you have. You are currently selling the bots are users. Sure, technically bots are also users... just not really what people come here for, so whilst technically correct, it's disingenuous. https://warpcast.com/dwr.eth/0xf073853b

I think its fair criticism that this graph doesn't map 1:1 to high quality accounts. @dwr.eth and I understand this, and are very open about it. I think most people on Farcaster understand it as well. We've tried different approaches to measuring quality (qDAU etc) but they haven't scaled well for various reasons.

This isn't a unique problem to Farcaster, its the same for all social networks. We've tried a bunch of approaches to get a better metric they haven't worked yet. We might succeed at this in the future once we get better at ML and automated classification.

But in the interim, we're going to talk about DAU. It's not a perfect metric, but its a rough proxy. The FC community has invested a lot of time and energy in trying to help this network get off the ground, and its nice to celebrate once in a while when things are going well.
