I call this idea the "feed marketplace" as opposed to "feed-as-a-service" which is what @openrank and others are doing. The challenge building a "choose your algorithm" is that the most interesting feeds are no longer just "algorithms" or fancy SQL queries.

Feeds are performance sensitive, and you cant just run a SQL query when someone is scrolling. Ideally, you have a very long cached feed for your users that can be quickly delivered on demand. This is computed and stored in a very fast in-memory datastore like Redis.

"Choose your algorithm: nowaday really boils down to choosing the data pumped into the ML ranking models + choosing the ML objective function. Which is easily doable once who pays for the many models being trained and served is solved. Needs a scalable feature store for all of them too.

Thinking about user behavior. Users can switch search engines in Safari and Firefox but often stick with the default, leading Apple and Firefox to auction prime real estate to the highest bidder. Introducing an algo plugin marketplace feels fresh, and might prove lucrative for the Warpcast client app team.

Kinda like the best playlists on Spotify aren't the strictly algorithmic ones. The best playlists have a human curator who throws in some curveballs in addition to the algo suggestions.

We explored this idea of feed marketplace at Nouns x Farcaster. Unsure about the marketplace bit, because it was meant as an open standard with a few partners like mbd.xyz Certain communities do have a vested interest though. For hourly use I’d definitely want a highly performant feed. But I’d also love to check other feeds for example from an algo marketplace from time to time and it wouldn’t matter much if they load in 1sec or 1min. In case many pick similar algos, it might be worth creating a true instant feed for it!
