For people who want DCs on web, do you prefer: 1. No Encryption - would ship this month, encryption added later, other fc clients could integrate next year 2. Encryption - takes another 6-12 months b/c blocked on Google Chrome passkeys support

If you are considering 1, why not just use XMTP? Instead of a Warpcast-only DC functionality, I'd rather see those 6-12 months spent adding an open source DC capability to Hubs, so all FC clients can use it.

Is there a path like: 3- Ship e2ee quickly for any browser with Passkeys, which includes people running password managers like 1Password? Or: Just use some other encryption algorithm, instead of passkeys? Example: Derive an encryption key from an account signature.

lots of folks replying 1, but if you want 1, isn’t that what Telegram is for? 🤔 in fact the early DC feature on here would just open telegram

Chrome supports passkeys natively, unless you’re trying to use an experimental feature?

1 but I have a question: Does it mean that DMs would "technically" be public and anyone technical enough could retrieve them in plain text? If "public" then you would really need to have a BIG disclaimer saying so because people won't assume that.

Always 1. Encryption above all and before all else.

My opinion: Wait for Encryption. Shipping a weak version (when you have the strongest "tripple ratchet" capability in the wings, al la @cassie 🧠 ) degrades the FC protocol brand. And also massively increases the likelihood it never actually lands, because "good enough" shipped, and the pressure value was released.

2. And I can’t believe I’m the one saying this bc I tend to be practical and there are very few things I’m a purist on. But this is something I think shouldn’t be compromised

would rather just be able to send DCs on web. i'm here to connect socially and want to be able to do that easily. not having DCs on web is a huge friction point for me. i find myself reverting to telegram, imessage with farcaster people for this reason — meaning i spend less time on warpcast compared to other apps

1 - progressive decentralization is fine Also curious what it would take to make this a protocol level thing?
