we tried for a few months to make the algo feed smart enough to figure out people's time preferences. 

having multiple feed and telling the user "you do the work" felt lazy, and we thought the better experience was learning whether users preferred fast moving content vs most engaging content. 

but this turned out to be really tricky in practice, time preference is actually quite hard to divine from just measuring likes and responses.
