this is a pandering move by biden and here's a long cast to explain why supreme court term limits and enforceable ethic codes may seem like a great idea, but the executive branch is not (and should not be) in charge of the judicial branch — neither is the legislative. that is fundamental to the design of our government and constitution. lifetime tenure* is in article iii of the constitution and the only way to remove a federal judge before they voluntarily step aside (or die) is via impeachment and conviction by congress. to change this requires a constitutional amendment, not legislation, and that requires 2/3s congress and 3/4s state legislatures. that is not going to happen. biden knows that is not going to happen. he's only saying it for political purposes. *lifetime tenure is good because in theory it reinforces the separation of powers; there's no pressure to appease politicians to keep their seat. washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/07/16/biden-supreme-court-reforms/
