Like all the business you see in an airport, I wonder how many missed their flight and are now forced or more likely to spend $ at the airport?

Years ago, when I started building a decentralized discord clone, people asked me why. I wanted a communication tool that was truly decentralized, in a way that no state actor was able to gain control over.

Signal's design wasn't capable of group chats beyond a certain size. The features only went so far. And it has failure points such that countries block them by firewall and have to rely on the good graces of others to run proxies, which ultimately get shut down or blocked too.

App stores do not share in this ideal — their concern is profit, and will bend backwards when forced to by regulatory bodies.

Amazon and others are complicit in helping state actors maintain their control of the web, and are profiting handsomely from the arrangement.

None of this happened by accident. And I only saw it getting worse. I realized what I was building in this chat application went beyond just chat, and how pressing it was to make this general purpose.

In the winter of '18-'19, I was pedaling people around on a pedicab as my main source of income. The stress that comes with a tips only outdoor hustle in the winter is what led me to calligraphy meditations. I became obsessed with them, doing them everyday. In February of 19 I had my first local show at a coffee shop. A few sold.

When covid hit exactly a year later, suddenly pedicab wasn't an option. I immediately turned to calligraphy meditations to find peace, and income while I sought for an essential worker gig. By the end of 2020 My gig had ended and I was transitioning to full-time NFTs. I've mostly worked in crypto/art since then.

What do you know? Turning up and putting the work in on a consistent basis produces something worth having.

Hot take: The thing that makes Pokemon awesome vs all the dumb cyrpto clones of it is that you didn't have to pay to get the Pokemon you wanted with the money from your pocket.  You payed once for the whole game (and the selection of Pokemon in it) and then the in-game mechanics were enough to give you enough playtime for dozens of hours.

Would Pokemon would be remembered the same if in order to play the user had to fork over money for every Pokemon and every battle rather than exploring the map, battling trainers, and catching Pokemon as part of the payment?

I dunno, but it seems like the crypto knock-offs seem to think that their game will be the next Pokemon despite being heavily optimized for draining your wallet(s)... pun intended.

I have to say, after three weeks of travelling, as much as I enjoyed it, I am tired of living out my bags, going place to place, and now just want to unpack and sleep in my own bed.

Does anybody know why oranges are more expensive in the US despite having local growers, versus Europe where they they are often imported?
