Farcaster

There are still many problems that need to be improved, and it still has a long way to go before it can become a powerful social application.

The Farcaster protocol does very little today in the way of solving conflicts or UX problems around multiple competing clients; which, one might expect, is the hard & important thing to solve in a social protocol.

Farcaster is being controlled & governed by the 99% client (Warpcast), repeatedly making choices that limit the ability of alternate clients to build and compete (See SIWF, Messaging, Channels).

As a builder, it's unclear why Farcaster is not any different from early Twitter, which was open, had alt clients, but one overwhelmingly dominant client. Once Twitter became big enough, it shifted from attracting to extracting, and shut down their API, becoming the Twitter of today, ruled by a benevolent dictator. Is Farcaster/Warpcast just running back the Twitter playbook? 

Why should we users and builders trust Warpcast's continued benevolence, when their short term choices are already showing a willingness to compromise on the Protocol part in the name of monoclient growth?

this thread has many imp points which deserve a thoughtful dialogue.
- whether crypto txns/activity feed needs to be a first class citizen on warpcast or other frens apps and interfaces take care of it?
- 3rd party apps on FC graph need to fight for distribution vs. warpcast the conundrum is real - building for the ecosystem vs. fighting your own battle (raise vc$, compete with WC)
- if growth is the north star. either WC takes full responsibility of bulldozing forward (fast iteration) OR let 3p apps build new experiences/vectors to bring net new users. For the latter, 3p devs need to be set up for success. 
- if Warpcast feed is the breeding ground for growth and app frames are the most imp lego for 3p devs.

"The new channels are terrible."

1. The old channels weren't working. So we opted to make a big, breaking change. Inevitably, some people were going to be upset. No risk, no reward.

2. We're actively improving channels. See the summary cast below for what we've already improved and what's on our radar. 

3. Our next big project is onboarding new users directly to a channel so they have a Day 1 channel to cast in and a community of people.

4. If your claim is "no one likes the new channels and they didn't take user feedback into account", see the second cast below for a slice of the network happy with the changes. Again, not claiming perfection, but let's start from a baseline that the changes worked for some users and did not work for others. And we're working to improve them for the people it didn't work for.

I think simplicity is the key to everything. If using a social software is always complicated and requires constant classification, more people will choose to abandon it and choose other social software that is more convenient and simpler.

Not being able to post in a channel when I want to is weird.

Not having a clear path to signal interest in being able to post in that channel or "request" or "apply" feels odd.

Almost feels like I need to re-route my intended post to one I'm a member 

I don't want to have to actively campaign to be a part of a channel outside of something very easy - like requesting to join a Facebook Group with a quick message as to why.

One year on from Farconnect istanbul, most of these problems are still unsolved in the Farcaster ecosystem

Increasingly, I am losing motivation to use it.
