It makes me insane seeing people promoting vc funded projects and apps for free on a regular basis like it’s their job. I understand the reasons behind why people do it, but the practice perpetuates a culture that continues to devalue creators

I agree with you completely that it devalues creators. 

Yet I struggle to reconcile that solidarity I feel with the fact that in the past, working for free once helped me land the best-paid creative job I've ever had.

TL;DR: Shit is complicated.

For sure this has happened. Glad it worked out for you. I just don’t think it’s the way things should be. I suppose I’m making subtle demands calling for a subtle strike 😂

I agree that it isn't the way things should be, so I kinda hesitated to say that. I don't want my comment to be read as tacit approval. 

And I should also clarify that there have been other times in my experience where working for free did *not* lead to paid work... only to exhaustion and frustration. That's the norm more often than not, actually. Landing the high-paid job was a rare exception. 

So even though shit is complicated, I'm still with you. Count me in for the strike... 😄
