Long form explanation of my sentiment around value extraction: https://paragraph.xyz/@trigs/mass-monetizing-social-media tagging in @danicaswanson and @abundance, as we've discussed the topics I address in here in great detail. Inspired by @macbudkowski and the /kiwi-news contest for Farcaster 2026.

Great article Trigs! My quick riff on that is that nearly every monetization model in the digital space today is either extractive or based on perverse incentives. I believe incentives are upstream from design, so if you're trying to build something prosocial without first building better incentives you'll inevitably either end up following the same extractive/perverse practices, or give up cuz you can't make your approach sustainable. My thesis is that decentralization/programmable money is the foundation to mechanisms that can align the common interest with self-interst (aka create non-extractive monetization models that benefit the common good), and if we build those everything else (how we design platforms to be more prosocial and not merely based on short term attention capture) will follow.

Thanks Mike! Appreciate your feedback! I agree on the programmable incentive design thesis. However, I think in the current landscape of crypto-distrust and pro-decentralization, we are in a transitory period where leading with incentives in the onboarding process is creating a barrier to entry. We're still experimenting with incentive models, but people are actively looking for a decentralized social home right now. Sometimes we have to play with the hand we're dealt! I do think the work you're doing is critical to the space and fits perfectly with the model I defined in my opinion piece.

Oh we definitely need to advance on all fronts simultaneously, and build a better incentive engine mid-flight. Just saying that without advancement on this engine the "decentralized" label only marginally improves user experience, since we're still dealing w the same engagement-based algos
