must be the warps withdrawals but fuck it i'm diving back into this thread to catch you up: i'm a fan of privileged first party clients and now to flame it some more: i'm all for secret features in 'em too testing like stats on this one, so my expanded thoughts are in the next reply 😇 -- first, check the thread: @dwayne defends going all-in on the algo feed as the fastest way to get a good algo feed and i think kinda the main argument @ghostlinkz.eth brings up is the opaque nature of the algo

let's even take it one step further -- (and i'm actually composing this thread manually in warpcast because @supercast scared tf outta me on my last on thread and only posted the first cast? but thank god the rest was saved as a draft somehow? @woj.eth, this is a bug report) -- and say that ALL clients should get to have secret features like, uh... *obviously* you freakin' free market minions but also, because SOCIAL MEDIA IS NOT LIFE OR DEATH and yes, i'm conceding that social media bridges economically disparate cultures and many of their associated marketplaces for some become their way to make a living -- I GET THAT but certainly farcaster is not there yet and to BANK on farcaster is, uh... not advised yo? like um actually NOT a sure thing, mmkay? if you wanna be early, then place your extra chips. add to the pot. build value. *grow* something. OR (and this is totally cool too, no judgement) ride the boat till it beaches somewhere and switch off yet another social network (remember google+?)

but right, secret features, let's reel it in warpcast should have secret features. i'm a fan. i'm not demanding this, but listen: i. love. subculture. it's hard to walk the line between in-crowd out-crowd stuff, but i believe a "cult following" is kind of like maybe one of the sickest things to participate in (and uh, TO BE CLEAR, 'm talking about pop culture cult followings here. i'm talking about being a fan of something.) and if you hide something people want, and they find it, and then your stupid analytics pixels says more and more traffic is hitting _some dumb endpoint_ then you can "pRoVe PmF" or some shit 🤮

reddit -- and i'm talking EEEEARLY reddit -- had this absolutely nerdy disgusting bat signal where people were asking "do you know when the narwal bacons?" and other nerdy disgusting bat-persons were responding "at midnight" and they'd both giggle and it was honestly too much but that's also where the still-prominent "BaconReader" iOS client got its name maybe some of you know reddit got venture capital'd somewhat recently and they cracked down on third party clients, but that's uh... let's pretend that's not a cautionary tale for a moment because i'm actually tryna say is: knowing something that others don't that YOU wanna share with somebody in particular... ... iiiiiiis. social. *MEDIA.* SO! for there to be something about... ... YOUR social media app... ...that has a secret? that you like? y'know what i'm sayin'?

early reddit nerds were ALSO very much all like "our platform is gonna kinda like redeem the internet a little bit 'cause, like, uhhh, it's pretty cool" and so much so that they were willing to endure being *ahem* REALLY EARLY FUCKING REDDIT NERDS around their friends and family, who similarly struggled to understand what they did for a living and while it is FAR too early to start considering ourselves really fucking early reddit nerds (reddit was actually successful, remember? you wanna compare yourself to THAT?) i *do* think we should consider that a platform that was once the model of third-party client paradises (i was a Relay man, myself) had SUCH a rabid fanbase that many people used multiple clients -- and! and! a LOT of those clients? *sucked.* for like, a WHILE. but different clients had different features and some people screamed about why Reddit is Fun didn't implement volume rocker scrolling and everyone ALSO acknowledged that they just. wanted. to browse. reddit.

and this was the early internet! APIs were like, NOT a standard thing to offer! reddit didn't care if BaconReader succeeded for like, YEARS but reddit itself was interesting enough that people were fighting tooth and nail to access it in some slightly non-default way anyway (seriously: i don't know why anyone ever used Reddit is Fun, i thought it was a garbage client for garbage people but it had like 60% market share at one point, it was *looney tunes*) and look at reddit now! it's the preferred knowledge source of the entire internet, supplanting even wikipedia in many ways so... was it their protocol neutrality that drove users to the platform and led to it's catapulting success?

anyone that's threatening to leave this early dorky fucking version of farcaster isn't-- i mean, like... MAYBE they are, but if they're arguing with ME on farcaster then i don't really think they're actually that serious the people that ACTUALLY aren't agreeing with farcaster are saying "something or other has triggered me to try out farcaster more lately" and then disappearing again but i -- me, actually, personally -- have to stick around because it's where i can find @july and @keccers.eth and @samantha and @sdv.eth and @accountless.eth and @six and @javabu.eth and @ccarella.eth and @tayzonday and @mazmhussain and @thecurioushermit and @daojoan.eth and @cameron and @swampnet. it's not because the default app is reverse chronological. so. secret features.

we should have them and they should be celebrated. and the first-party maintainer should participate in the fun. because social media might be existential in this current day and age but we also just CAN'T take it that seriously. and, not to get preachy, but, like, we've gooootta forgive facebook and twitter and tumblr and reddit and who else could i name that it felt like they kinda betrayed me... because, i mean... they TRIED, y'know? and it was even good for a time. and for many there's STILL value there. ... but it's like resenting your parents for being first time parents. like... the damage is done, dude. what are you gonna do about it NOW?
