Seeing lots of people on Twitter dunk on this new law in Australia preventing children under 16 from using social media. What do you think?

The underlying premise is fine — social media is harmful to kids under a certain age, but I can’t see any way this works: • Parents that have let their kids get sucked into social media are suddenly going to enforce this policy? • Knowing Oz, it’s probably a back-door to full on KYC & restricted speech • I reckon laws for something as addictive as social media are going to work as well as age-restricted drinking & smoking laws. I say this as a parent who didn’t let our kids have phones until they were teenagers, and we still monitor their usage (though I will admit we let them use social media more than we would like sometimes, but we know that that’s on us as parents). All that said, I’m very interested in the approaches some schools have taken to prohibit phones in class, e.g., put them in a basket when coming in.

All valid points. The take below makes sense to me - if the norm is for kids to have phones and be on social platforms by 13 then it’s tough to keep your kids off because they’ll be missing important social context when interacting with their peers So even if the point is just to shift the norm I think it’s worth a try https://warpcast.com/cooki/0x450064fc

That’s a good take and works toward a healthy scenario. So many variables — parents, peers, alternatives, content, role models, creators, etc. — to market work.
