Discuss: Something my I’ve been a little obsessed with since I heard Peter Thiel mention it about the Great Pyramids. “What motivated them culturally?” 1:04:36 https://youtu.be/klRb0_BAX9g?si=zoliRfQqQB955G1-

Sure it is a pretty crazy feat to build the pyramids, and how they did it is astounding! But, the reason for why is greater. Why was a civilization or more specifically a group of elites so motivated to build them?

Apply that to today. Why were a group of people working to build a decentralized version of the internet? Why should a culture be interested or motivated to adopt it? Why is there an arms race for AI?

Most of us will likely give the obvious answer: “escape technofuedalism” or “build leverage using AI and be its controller” But we know with crypto that the history goes a long way back to the original cypherpunks and AI has a history going to even further back with a more recent history with EA.

About AI, I think it's interesting to consider how its development is driven by both practical needs like automation, efficiency…and ideological ambitions like control, optimization But then, what do you think is the primary driver behind the arms race for AI? Is it about creating a more efficient and productive world, or is it about gaining an advantage over others?

Probably the similar to Nuclear. Starts as a mechanism for improving society, but quickly becomes an arms race for having an advantage over another power (US v China). And wanting to be the controller of this power.

The desire to be the controller of this power is indeed a crucial aspect of this phenomenon. Just as nuclear power has the potential to be used for both good and harm, AI can be used to benefit humanity or to gain an upper hand in international relations. I never knew much about Ai and the news around it until i came on farcaster, but it’s great to be up to date What do you think are some of the key challenges and opportunities that we'll face as we move forward with the development of AI?
