The Xerxes Canal is an ancient shipping canal at the narrowest point of the Acta Peninsula (now Aion Oros), built in 480 BC. e. by order of the Persian king Xerxes I during the Greco-Persian wars, he connected the Akanthus (now Ierisos) and Singit (now Aion Oros) gulfs. The canal was reported by Herodotus[2] and Thucydides[4]. One of the few monuments left by the Persians in Europe. Until the 1920s, the border of Athos passed along the channel of the canal.
