there are 2 types of agentic protocols and longterm, there is a big difference in how they evolve and play out. while the space of agentic protocols is nascent, it is important to understand the difference 🧵

type 1 is based on stake, where permissionless ownership is the foundational authority to which the system has to align, coercing it to serve stake interests. the token sits deep at the core.

type 2 is where the token is separatable from the system and its integration is shallow, like most projects today. tokenless is the extreme form.

it is not that one of them is fundamentally better, though stake-based makes the superior asset, but as protocols they operate differently longterm.

the stake-based agentic protocol, over time, becomes subverted to the thermodynamic god. this means, they are fully exposed to be formed under its pressures. as a result, monetary energy is more and more streaming into its body.

but this is a tradeoff, it also means that the scope of its agency is getting diverted towards serving capitalist interests. and if the system is stake-based, its setup for that from the very beginning.

this might limit exploration of interesting ideas and experiments because they seem "too inefficient" or like too much of an affordance or distraction from the other aggressively followed goals.

with seperatable tokens, not deeply integrated into the system, this dynamic does not exist natively in the protocol. it only exists in its community invested into the token trying to shape its direction to serve their interests, but this plays out much weaker.

this makes the protocol more free, at less risk of being subverted. and on long time-horizons, it stays more open to exploration. depending on the goal, a strong advantage.

however, the disadvantage is that its longterm ability to attract monetary energy from the thermodynamic god is limited, and its ability to divert it towards its growth is comparably inefficient.

our team at renlabs is fan of both types! but with $TORUS we dedicate ourselves towards exploring the stake-based direction as we believe it is going to outcompete on growth and organizational efficiency longterm, ultimately creating more valuable things.

we are equally keen on seeing tokenless agentic protocols that unarguably have more longterm autonomy due to independence from capitalist forces and have higher potentiality to do entirely surprising things. it will be extremely interesting to see this play out 🫡
