I think to succeed financially as a crypto artist today, community/audience building plays a much bigger role - if your main medium of monetizing your work is these open edition mints on Rodeo Zora etc, and these mints are more akin to “likes with money” rather than actually Collecting Art Objects, then the role becomes more similar to that of an influencer than a traditional Artist™️ because you’re optimizing for “likes”.

I don’t think one should think of these mints as Art Objects that are now being “devalued” to 30c, but that requires a bit of a mental shift since that’s what the whole digital art nft framing was built on.

i think we'll see two different ways for artists to explore:

- posting onchain: zora and rodeo aren't for selling art but more for social posts. sharing some art pieces or designs so the community can collect it for fun (not for financial upside)
- selling on foundation/superrare/etc: back to how art nfts were valued last cycle, where artists can share a narrative/story behind the art and sell it at a fixed price or auction

you can play with different mechanics there, like time-based ones..instead of the 24h on rodeo, limit it to 1h - creating scarcity out of an OE. though those OEs always attracted 'collectors,' they didn't make much sense as the art had no value or utility in the end

i agree on seeing different paths and, zooming out, those 0.000025eth can have a huge impact when the user base 'goes mainstream'

+ there's a lot of value in how monetization can be distributed when those posts are shared or remixed

hmm interesting thoughts on the scarcity but in the end what gives art value?

this is not the greatest example but i think easy to understand what i'm trying to express

a lot of old-time artists became famous after death (van gogh, vermeer, etc). those artworks were of little value until they became famous or mainstream

so unless you are already famous, your OEs likely will have little secondary value in a sense

obv you will have some hardcore collectors that will support you and see the value in your work

however if you are continuously posting and creating a fan base, these OEs technically over time should gain value on secondary as more and more people see your work

and if you hit mainstream, your old work is likely to get bid and bought

the nft boom with 1/1s on foundation, etc was very interesting, we had the opposite of what i'm saying, essentially non-famous artists getting high bids for their work

price is subjective of course but i think we can all agree that more fans = higher prices

i also do feel like we are thinking of zora + rodeo on a small scale (right now), imagine the user base 100x'd

i do think there will be financial upside for artists, esp if you have a big audience

you will have followers/collectors that want to collect every piece of yours

i like to compare OEs to prints and 1/1s to originals

meaning an artist can do both for the same piece (ex, zora + foundation)

but i'm not even sure if i like that framing myself haha but i do tend to think of it like that

I don’t think speculators are a bad thing, mostly just that the last cycle nft art market was artificially propped up by them - and now they won’t return because better more liquid ponzis exist now

I think 1/1 auction style might be too skeuomorphic in the long run anyway, cryptomedia wants new mechanisms

sadly we'll always have some speculators in this space, maybe there are more private sells (like trad art) where only certain collectors can get on the next artblock art - but few artists can currently do that in crypto imo

For the latter to return I think you need actual new Art Collectors entering the space, as opposed to mercenary speculators larping as Art Collectors. Maybe that will happen but not clear to me how yet
