Few people know that Larry Ellison is a longevity OG You can get a taste of his philosophy at Sensei, his line of longevity hotels founded in 2018!! I am pretty sure BJ was still eating meat back then! https://sensei.com/sensei-story/

Larry Ellison also wants us to apparently live long enough to see 1984 in realtime https://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/news/billionaire-larry-ellison-says-a-vast-ai-fueled-surveillance-system-can-ensure-citizens-will-be-on-their-best-behavior/ar-AA1qCbNJ

We deserve this and honestly I’m glad if he’s actually building it and not just talking about it. People barely even obey red lights anymore. We have lost our sense of obligation to one another and so this is what we get. I will happily lose my privacy so I don’t have to walk around like a scared little rat with pepper spray.

The problem with a surveillance panopticon is that, in addition to enforcing the laws and social norms that you approve of, it will also enforce the laws and social norms that you might not like so much. Do you want to smoke weed in a state where it's illegal? Not an option anymore. Do you need to travel out of state to get an abortion because your state outlawed abortions with no exceptions? Now your state will be able to find out where you went and prosecute you and whoever drove you there. Do you have friends with criminal records or unpopular political ideologies? Your state knows about it now, and you'll probably be scrutinized for associating with the wrong people. I don't agree with Cassie's claim that more people having guns will make anyone safer, but I know total surveillance isn't the answer.

It feels unfair to ask me to tolerate actual criminality today to ward off theoretical future threats that might not even happen :/

Two of the three things I listed are currently real in the state where you live.

Well, that actually then reads as more of an endorsement to proceed. The harms happened without computer based law enforcement, so…..

> you can’t have surveillance because these bad things will happen > gotcha they already happened I feel like this weakens the argument. Those “harms” exist independent of the Clearview AI equipped red light cameras I want on every corner? This might be a weak point itself I have had this debate so many times in my groupchats…. And I see the logic in protecting the freedoms of the scoundrels. And I get frustrated bc it seems like the rights of people who want to antagonize the gov or smoke pot are more important than mine to just take a walk without having to bring a weapon

I'm not trying to trivialize your frustration about not being safe, but I don't think you should think of the people who would be hurt by intrusive surveillance as a separate entity from yourself. Maybe you don't care about wanting to smoke weed in your home and you don't need medical care that the state deems illegal, but I guarantee there are some aspects of your life that fall outside of legal or social norms, and surveillance would put a stop to that. My point is that it's currently possible for people to commit "harmless" crimes with a reasonable amount of caution, but they wouldn't be able to with a sufficiently advanced surveillance system. The "harms" don't really exist yet. But the first thing an advanced AI driven surveillance system would be used for is prosecuting those crimes because it's easier than preventing random acts of violence on the street. You'd end up in a situation where all your actions are being monitored, but I'm skeptical that your physical safety would really be improved.
