Hi @danielletrussoni what kind of marketing do you do for your books, and is that something that you handle yourself or contract out?

Here I am yesterday at a local news station, where I spoke about The Puzzle Box. Thus kind of marketing and publicity is now pretty rare

I do most of my marketing myself. I’m a traditionally published author who has published seven books with random House , HarperCollins, and McMillan. Usually, these publishers, have an in-house marketing team. Over the past 10 years I’ve watched that change radically.

For self published authors, this is actually a great., Because you can reach more people more quickly than ever before. For traditionally published authors, it’s a bit of an adjustment. I still think that the ability to reach new readers is easier than ever, but there’s a lot of obstacles in your way if your traditionally published.

I spend time on social media channels, but I’m also doing marketing that involves personal outreach to the bookstores that are remaining. I also have a newsletter, and try to stay in touch with my readers as much as possible. And all of that is on me to do.

It used to be that a publisher would send you out on tour, and you would be hitting bookstores, signing books, and meeting local media people. Book review sections, and press about books has diminished significantly in the past 10 years, so that’s no longer the case. And authors generally do a lot of marketing online.
