If that is someone’s goal (I’m not sure it’s the best one) they’ll prob need to hit 500+ followers first

I thought the goal is to get into the automated recommendation algorithm for new users and collect thousands of followers a month. 😇

When I first got to fc I asked for advice, and @cameron basically said “reply a lot” — which I found super helpful as an 80/20 version of the above

It’s the way I ended up discovering my own version of how to build a network of a bunch of diverse people that I consider friends

What’s the value of unfollowing?

My rough rule is that if a person was worth replying to, they are worth following. (Even if I don’t agree with most of their opinions, if I thought it important to reply to them, they should be part of my collective conversation)

I only unfollow people if they get toxic or spammy

Unfollow if follow is not responded to with a follow back after ~72 hours  ✍️

Good tips! FC is a new platform so it still has a feeling of camaraderie and common goals. Let’s keep it that way as long as possible

It honestly feels a little silly to be earnestly searching find a place in this ecosystem - don't need a bunch of followers, just would like to engage more. Following this advice (though pressing the follow and reply button simultaneously is challenging)

It’s not about chasing numbers — it’s just that having a not insignificant number of followers is desirable for two real reasons:

More people see your thoughts
More people take you seriously

Couldn’t agree more. My cast to reply ratio is high. It suits me and supports having conversations and connecting with people which is what I want. I also think who cares about milestone of 500 followers? I like to think of this as social platform first, marketing and branding second.
