when was the last time an L1 "breakthrough in tech" led to a truly popular blockchain use case? aren't all the most dominant apps in the space (DEXs, NFTs, memecoins) things that would've been possible with ETH tech from pre-2020?

- All alternative PoS when ETH was still PoW made it more inevitable that ETH would switch - Celestia et al. led ETH to add blob storage or anyways it DAS was discovered together - state channels on BTC eventually lead to Plasma and Rollups

- PoS: eco friendly crypto txs - rest: cheaper tx fees for all sorts of dapp use cases like NFT minting en mass, ENS, stablecoins, paying bills in crypto, lending

we had PoS Peercoin txs in 2013, not a new usecase cheap tx fees isn't a new use case (Bitcoin had those when it first launched) and all those things you mentioned it enables were already possible, they aren't new use cases either
