Ultimately this will be a net good I think. So many people trusted Telegram when it was never a secure option. Hopefully people will move to Signal and Session for more sensitive conversations, and web3 can move to XMTP finally 🤞

This is certainly a sad news for people who rely on Telegram being secure. However, it's an opportunity for decentraluzed messangers. But the question remains, if other messangers are regulated, web3 messangers be spared?

This is a good mental framework to approach this for those in need of strong privacy like journalists and political dissidents. 

Assume everything is weak and harden to the maximum degree. 

Still from that viewpoint, the hardest option is the best starting point because if it’s not colloquially used, it’s kind of an obvious target. 

ie if you see signal on someone’s phone, you might be able to assume they’re leaking to journalists or conspiring with dissidents. 

I prefer to approach this like you would approach private financial transactions. Unless the pool of private transactions is enormous, the privacy is effectively lost.

only allows government to catch stupid criminals and gives them excuse to look up everyone’s messages

I think all (not explicitly public/town square) conversations are sensitive enough that you might not want them to be fully public. Many are sensitive enough that you might not want them scrutinized by authorities or governments especially in situations where laws have changed since the data was gathered. And some are sensitive enough that folks from dangerously restrictive areas can never participate regardless of their contribution due to the potential toxicity of their digital paper trail.

I don’t think I ever have said anything in my private conversations for what I could be punished / considered illegal

So I don’t think there’s a need to move to signal unless you actually do something illegal or risking get jailed for political reasons, but also the countries where you risk it for political reasons - they don’t have access to most social media and messengers, including telegram

Nothing to do with being a criminal. Plenty of lawful people would be at risk if their conversations leaked: journalists, activists, law enforcement, politicians.

To say nothing of people who are morally correct but legally targeted by authoritarian regimes.

As I pointed out in another response, the more people who use a truly private service, the better the overall privacy.

This feels not too bad tbh in the grand scheme of things, if you’re using a cellphone your cell provider already caves and provides location, tower pings, etc.

Agreed it should get ppl to focus on apps we like but overall if you’re a criminal using a cell is already a bad move
