Do people actually consciously make a judgement about quality of service when they tip??!

I always just mindlessly add 15-20%. So the whole "tipping incentivizes quality of service" argument has always seemed unrealistic to me.

I tip well out of fear because most places I eat at once are places I eat at twice.

I always tip at least 20% regardless of service just because of how the U.S. tipped wage system is set up.  They *need* those tips, and if I can't afford to tip well, I can't afford to eat out because I try really hard not to be the sort of person who tries to justify exploiting someone else's labor for my comfort.
