Why do people find this so hard to believe? They were tapping your landlines in the '70s!

They can infer a mindblowing amount of things from the data they do collect, no need to listen overtly. Only going to get more accurate with AI being used come up with cool new way to track... https://www.sify.com/technology/this-neural-network-uses-wifi-to-see-through-walls/

talk about something completely random like diapers for a day and see how long it takes you to get relevant ads

There's a Reply All episode about this very topic. TLDR is you're correct. Location data (freely given) and shopping behavior tracked with cookies is all you need. https://gimletmedia.com/shows/reply-all/z3hlwr

i'm on your algo-so-good team but *definitely* think ads will purposefully leak across devices in the same household or on the same wifi network. couple that with things people talk about are things they recently saw or searched and there's your explanation

Also people forget that the algorithms cluster based on nearby phones. I can Google something and a person who lives with me, like a roommate/spouse, will have their algo slightly influenced by my searches if there is overlap. This is often how they "listen", they literally read the room.

Me and gf tested this by purposely talking about getting a bird and suddenly got bird and bird supply ads for like a month straight. You will trust the algo and you will like it

This absolutely true!!!!!! 💯 Said to the wife last week. My phone's listening to me talk! Ads specific to conversations popping up far too commonly 🪄
