But if that were true, wouldn’t people retain the understanding of why they do certain traditions, which they often seem to not? 🤔

I think that's why we forget. I see forgetting as a gift to some extent. It's the way of discovering new local maximums because we forget where we are and we start exploring again. Obviously we don't forget everything, like a perfect delete, but we forget some details.

The important part of forgetting is documenting it. If we do that, then we can learn from it and keep exploring getting away of the usual paths because we will be repeating the same processes that we forget.
