genuine political question: if you believe in a free democracy, how do you grapple with the fact that the DNC isn’t having debates for any of its presidential nominees and will likely not allow for a presidential debate? i genuinely don’t understand why it seemingly doesn’t bother anyone, regardless of party.

Yeah. Mostly because the risk of undermining the incumbent’s electoral odds isn’t worth the reward of seeing the marketplace of ideas in action. Parties are instruments of interests that want to win I’m with you, but I suspect the bother factor is less than odds-are-worse with-debate factor, so no debate

Honestly the only people I've seen defending this are either terminally online redditors, or LLMs pretending to be terminally online redditors. I think it'll be the last straw in the DNC's undoing on this campaign. It's not like they're polling very well to begin with right now.

Most realise it’s not a true democracy at the moment but are numb & powerless to it.

It’s wild. The mental gymnastics required to rationalise this is Olympic standard.

this is why the dnc has lost my vote. public debate is essential and should not be optional for the leader of the free world. shameful.

The RNC didn't host debates in 2020, it's pretty normal actually when an incumbent is running for the National Committees not to host debates.

DNC built a culture of censorship and control stemming from hillary loss, and the no debate is just an extension of that. i see a relatively "healthier" republican party who have interesting debates and three competing ideologies (maga vs GOP hawks vs centrists).

I think the last time an incumbent debated their own party was Jimmy Carter x Teddy Kennedy.

I think it's largely apathy. Voters know it's not a free democracy (and hasn't been for decades, maybe longer) and just don't see a path to fight it (which is sad). Two party systems are for the birds.

Not commenting on whether the DNC should hold debates, but keep in mind until the 1970s, people didn't vote in primaries at all. The party just picked someone. The primary system is a new and evolving process that is somewhat convoluted.
