I've been in this exact situation (down to passing each other on the sidewalk).
You're not the asshole. You chose to be cordial, polite, and kind.
A buddy of mine is going through something somewhat similar where the other person said that it's too painful for him to politely say "hi" in social settings. Maybe that's where this ex-friend of yours is, and they're dealing with some sort of trauma or mental illness. In that case, their behavior may have a reason, and it's important to recognize that reason has nothing to do with you. It's entirely possible that they're not an asshole either, just hurting, and hurt people hurt people.
In my case, I was heartbroken because it was all very sudden, and I considered this other person a close friend. Years later, we reconciled and they apologized. They were going through some stuff and I got caught in the cross-fire.
