i think it’s masterful distraction strategy that we’re discussing immigrants in Ohio eating pets as some abstract definition of racism instead of focusing on the *actual* issues caused by an unchecked border (national security and debt, employment, healthcare), and i think we’re all foolish to be falling for it.

But who created the distraction? JD Vance and his weird cronies. No one prompted Trump to falsely claim Haitians were eating their neighbors pets. This has been a purely right wing effort to stoke (largely racial) fear about *legal* immigrants to persuade voters to choose Trump. And how can we talk about border security without talking about how Lindsey Graham himself on the Senate floor told us that Donald Trump tanked a bipartisan border security bill this year that everyone but Trump and his sycophants wanted to pass?

the point is that i don't want to talk about assumptions about right wing or left wing efforts or racism i would like to learn about and talk about immigration policy

I agree with you, and if you look back on past presidential debates, before Donald Trump entered the political arena, we used to have these types of adult discussions. But Trump is solely responsible for the complete degradation of these types of policy discussions. Trump could have provided a substantive response to Harris talking about him tanking the bipartisan border bill, he could have identified something concrete within it that he wanted to improve upon, or a tangible reason it didn't do enough. Instead he talked about Haitian's eating dogs and cats like a total maniac.

i agree that Trump missed a lot of key opportunities to talk about his policies and, again (let me repeat for the whatevernth time), i would rather learn and talk about specifics on immigration policies than read a paragraph about how Trump is responsible for degradation of whatevernth thing

Sure let's discuss: One of the biggest issues with border encounters is that many are claiming asylum, and because we have a legal (and moral) duty to provide asylum to those with legitimate claims, we have to assess the veracity of those claims. This is not a quick and easy process and the asylum courts are very understaffed/underfunded. One of the largest allocations in the now-dormant bill, was to allocate over $2b to improve this asylum claims processing. It also raised the bar for the initial screening for the asylum claim to be allowed entrance, and limited the amount of encounters and required deportations without asylum claim considerations depending on daily/weekly amounts. Harris has said she would bring back and sign this Bill. https://www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/research/analysis-senate-border-bill
