there's this intentional community in oakland called radish it's actually a a 19-person multigenerational compound based on what they call the Obvious Truth: people are happiest and healthiest surrounded by people they love and admire fascinating IRL case study that makes me question the power of a network state

This points to a big thing that I care about, but places like Radish are just a subset of the larger opportunity to make the world better RN Love the people around you because they are the people around you. Just knock on your neighbors door and ask them to be your friend Same outcome, less financial entanglement

network states are an anti-woke take on these kinds of projects which have been around for a long time

This sounds like heaven or what could be a kibbutz-style life without the farm aspects and shows that there were such great things about our history that we need to go back to and foster.

question in what way? To me this example personifies what much of the network state is about: self-contained micro communities

Link for the lazy: https://radishoakland.com/ This is awesome! Some friends and I are starting something similar though much smaller (only ~9 people, 7 are full time residents). I really wanna document some of the stuff we've done too so other people can benefit from our struggles.

fascinating! I believe we all know how important it is to surround ourselves with people that can support us / we care about - but it’s the multigenerational part I’ve been super intrigued by more as of late like how generations of families would grow up together and how that leads to longer, happier lives will read into radish! what a funny name im now reminded that my husband used to live in a community called magic camp - story for another time 🙃

I live in a 13 bedroom community home that I cofounded 9 years ago (we currently include a Radish alum too… that crew is nearby and great). Our home is awesome, and also it won’t scale. Network states seem designed for scale, but shared ideals ≠ community. In my experience, if you want happy community vibes you need to be rooted with a close knit crew of absolutely no more than 20 people. Maybe you can have a bunch of small pods like that within a network state, but if there’s no small pod, there’s no vibes.

In the US, we're so individualistic that joining a community can feel like navigating a reality TV show. I mean, why risk it? The minute someone asks, "Whose name is on the loan?" or "What if someone remarries and we all hate the new partner?" you realize the juice might not be worth the squeeze. Plus, we all know the drama that comes with splitting a Netflix account!

Is this sort of community common? Not only do I live in the Midwest, but I rarely leave my house, so I didn’t know this was a thing.

Wow this always fascinates me. I will never understand how people can live together and share so much without being overwhelmed by toxic positivity.

I knew a guy at my IRL job who left to start a commune in Kentucky with his extended family. He showed me the designs and its very similar to this.
