Let's just say Apple had chosen to build a search engine themselves instead of sell the distribution to Google. Do you think they'd still let you use other search engines?

plot twist: Apple did choose to build a search engine themselves — spotlight and safari autocomplete function as their own search engines. i’ve been using spotlight more and more across all my devices because it searches web + my own phone (across all apps and the content of all apps). excited to see what they do

Yeah, don’t underestimate how the download apps to App Library vs download to Home Screen setting helps to increase the adoption of spotlight for universal search on iPhones.

I wrote this some time ago, but it doesn't look like something that Apple is actively pursuing. https://blog.vrypan.net/2015/06/09/does-apple-have-a-search-strategy-i-think-so/
