hot take: TAM for memecoin trading is quite limited relative to real-world use cases global retail trading market is $5T and highly fragmented vs cross-border payments alone have a market of $156T Pew Research found only 15% of US adults expressed interest in memecoins vs 80% in blockchain for practical use cases

additional note: apps like Yapster (s/o @salvino) can expand this TAM, but few teams think like his.

70-80% of US adults have gambled at least once and 50-60% do so in some form each year, so I think the TAM is pretty large for memecoins I think your point on remittances is valid though, just doesn’t answer why apps like Moonshot are growing faster than payment apps. or perhaps the latter’s metrics are understated because we need to look at stablecoin flows themselves, not just the app layer.

I don’t think this is right. Memecoins are a new primitive and we have no idea how they are going to be applied or used. It could be an enormous industry

I feel like this might be a case of stated versus revealed preference. Nobody wants to say they love memecoins in a poll, but when they do come onchain, it seems that speculative applications of the technology are more often than not the hook.

I keep thinking about the R/R curve (I'm sure many degens are intuitively familiar with this https://youtu.be/8TJQhQ2GZ0Y?t=1295) crypto is ridiculously jagged due to regulatory/counterparty risk. local gatherings are an opportunity for trust networks, which are opportunities to capture remittance market share.

I'd be curious to hear what the top-mentioned practical use case was for that 80%.

meme coin is one of the few places where some teenager can ape in $100 on his phone, and somehow end up with life changing money (like ~1 million). I don't think stock market can do that
