I disagree. web3 social is a silver bullet that'll solve all problems socials ever had. even the ones it wasn't designed to solve.

neither are good however you can design tokens as social lubricants (h/t @christopher) rather than them having to carry intrinsic financial value we don’t collect POAP to later sell them, we collect them to have onchain proof of attendance (which *may* be rewarded later on)

It’s not good. The playbook for hacking human psychology for addiction is known (in: Hooked by Eyal). $$ takes this to the next level. The hope of DeSo is bringing all stakeholders to the table. If users have more say in what is being built and devs have more access to capital, maybe we will end up with smth better.

Any system that rewards / incentivizes engagement and performant behavior vs. authenticity is going to be bad for mental health. We live in an attention economy and many of us are poor at managing our attention (time).

This is a wonderful point. Web2 apps always start out innocently, then eventually folks figure out how to monetize. We are going *straight* to the monetization on web3. I still feel like there is quite a bit of friction to make real money as a web3 influencer without a background in web3.

We can't look to tech to fill in the gaps in our social immaturity, shortcomings, inexperience, etc. Tech can't ensure or enforce virtue. But ownership is an inherent good because it creates self- autonomy and agency. That's not necessarily web3>2, but web3 = higher likelihood of ownership.

another major problem associated with web2 social algo - increase in consumption bias and echo chambers. circular and obsessive behavior. - encourages general dishonesty - indirect focus on $ for public accounts crypto fixes this 😂 no it doesn’t. but i don’t necessarily think it brings out worse attributes.

highly recommend tyler's podcast with jonathan haidt https://conversationswithtyler.com/episodes/jonathan-haidt-anxious-generation/ does a really good job pushing haidt on his claims (not crypto related)

If this ever scales society-wide it will be interesting to see but I think right now the shared beliefs/vibes of folks on web3 social makes it a much healthier place than web2 social. I agree it’s something to worry about in the long term - as amounts get smaller, vibes get worse (smallest customers are biggest PITA)

economic models in web2 have strongly relied on ads and hence sucking attention from people which has caused negative effects "hope" with web3 is that there are newer economic incentives that are unlocked that are better aligned with users

I believe the core design elements of both web2 and web3 is actually attention. The difference with web3 is it allows more people to participate in the value capture of that attention. So yea it's better, but mainly in that single way.

was a web2.0 enthusiast back in 2005 and shocked when I heard the first report on pro-ana on tumblr. bullying was visible and tackled from the start, but the damage from a caring community hit differently. web3 atm is classic gambling and scam. there will be unknown damage from the caring side.

Both are really bad but I think web3 is worse since it financializes the whole thing. Look what happened here the last few months with tipping...worst imaginable shilling just to get more likes so they could get more tips. It was a perfect doom spiral when bots / greed was introduced competing with vanity and likes.

I also feel iffy with the focus on $! I don’t think web3 social has the answer yet with creating more cozy online spaces, and there are lots to learn from studies such as this one on attentional agency: https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.14614

That is a interesting thought. You are still suffering but at least you are getting paid, so all good. Jk... I am not sure, my gut feeling is that yes, it's better. While reading the book I found his work important, changes like no phone in school sounds obvious, kids should play, 100% But...
