How has the American political system not produced a viable independent candidate? 

- Popularity doesn’t require capital, you can go viral on social media for next to nothing. 
- Most Americans are tired of the two party system 
- Most Americans feel like they are being dragged to the extremes

Mainly the voting system, it herds people into two parties. 

Also Biden is pretty moderate and Trump has 30% locked down, so the politically homeless centrist vote is probably 25% tops. And lots of those are a mix of extreme opinions instead of lots of average opinions, so they'd disagree with the centrist guy a lot.

winning elections seems like it depends on appealing to voters who have already been captured by existing parties, and there are lot of people in the same party who cant see eye to eye on certain issues - a single person would fail to cast that wide of a net
