*A Long Walk*

This is a master thread to jot down observations about my walk from Cadiz to Tarifa, along the southern coast of Spain.

A five day walk with a good friend, our camino took us 127.5km over five days.

And while not an "official" route of the Camino de Santiago, it turns out that doesn't matter (to me anyways).

Decided to walk from Cadiz to Tarifa in southern Spain with a good friend this week. 

It’s not the “official” Camino de Santiago, but it’s just perfect with the weather this time of year.

Day 1: Cadiz to Chiclana de la Frontera.

The “frontier” part of the name refers to about 500 years ago when this was the border between Catholic Spain and the last stronghold of the Almohad empire (Moors).

Day 2 of makeshift camino in Spain: Chilcana de la Frontera to Conil de la Fontera.

Another 25.25 km (53.8 km so far). Gorgeous sunny day, 8-18 degrees C. 

We caught our first glimpses of Northern Africa! (Tangiers, Morocco)

A great start at the “cafe for older men”: a breakfast of a slice of bread, puréed tomatoes, copious amounts of olive oil, coffee and a sweet sherry wine.

The funny thing is that we passed the “cafe for older women” a few blocks after breakfast 😆

Day 3 of my makeshift Camino journey in Spain. From Conil de la Frontera to Barbate.

25.7 km out of 80km so far.

A beautiful day, but a little more challenging than previous days due to soft sand and 30 km winds in our face. 

(Which were perfect for the wind surfers!)

Day 4 of makeshift Camino from Cadiz to Tarifa.

Barbate to Bolonia.

24.25 km out of 103.9km so far

Flat to start with some hills coming into Bolonia. 

Big hills = big views!

With the nice vantage point, we could see quite a lot of ship traffic going through the strait. 

This really is an interesting part of the world, geographically

Day 5 of 5 on my makeshift Camino from Cadiz to Tarifa.

Today was 23.5km of walking, for a total trip of 127.5km. We walked from Bolonia to Tarifa.

During the night, heavy rains and wind pounded the windows of our hotel room.

We anticipated the weather and planned a late start. By 9am the forecast called for a clear day, and we were walking by 10:30.

We got lucky with the weather!

The day was perfect, overcast and cool as we had a big climb out of Bolonia.

We also discovered where van life occurs in southern Spain, highly correlated with perfect kite surfing conditions.

Happy feet, happy times. Grass was touched for a week 🙏

A different pace of life 🚶 

Walking is how humans used to move around. And European towns developed around this human scale mode of travel.
