2 but not sure what it’ll take to get to a point where it makes sense to do it (maybe getting closer to AGI?)

i’d rather the conversation be how can we solve poverty defined as everyone has access to quality healthcare, stable housing, nutritious food, and then we can talk about giving ppl an allowance

5 True universal basic income implies a post-scarcity future, which if attained, rules the concept of currency useless anyway. Anything else is attempted socialism with extra steps and extra consequences/opportunities for grift.

5 With UBI in place, politics just becomes a matter of who will promise to raise the monthly payments by more. Also generally against govt involvement in more areas of life That said, if UBI replaces complex existing govt subsidies and removes the bureaucracy in administering them, that would be an improvement

1 Baseline level of redistribution is the only way we’re going to be able to have a stable society as more and more classes of rote work go away. Best case is that we cap most people’s existential downside and funnel more people towards high volatility reward paths

4 individual needs are too different that a simple payment will cover everyone. It’s moving perceived inequality, but not solving it

"Nice UBI you have there. Would be a shame if something were to happen to it." "Oh, you don't want a poorly tested experimental biologically agent from a corrupt company and enforced by a captured regulator. No UBI for you. Enjoy your fast. Let us know when you're hungry enough to come back."

5... we'd be a lot better off if we forget about this pie-in-the-sky idea and focus on making society better in concrete ways. UBI is just another excuse for us all to argue instead of actually doing something. The people that UBI claims to help would be much better-off if we fixed healthcare, education, and safety.

3 I think about commodities that anyone can produce with as few resources as possible, like sybil-resistant PoW, but actually useful for other goods. if we had a free global market for that, it might suffice until post-scarcity
