Oof, quality took a hit :( Thinking a fun project I might take up is a mini Farcaster client that purely lets user cast full res images to the photography channel 👀 cc @usersteen.eth

Something that always bothered me when posting images to Warpcast was the quality. Anytime I had larger photos they got squashed hard and it wasn’t great to see.

This prompted me to build a simple cast launcher that could send high res images as casts. The goal was to keep the quality without sacrificing performance. How? IPFS.

Images uploaded to Photocaster are stored on IPFS as intact full res images, so at any time you can use the CID to get the raw content yourself.

On the flip side, how do we keep clients from lagging over the size? IPFS Dedicated Gateways. Pinata’s Dedicated Gateways have image optimization built in, so the link used in the cast is an optimized version.

With Photocaster you’ll see an expand button for any images using IPFS, and clicking on it will expand it to the full resolution. This is such a great use case for IPFS in Farcaster and was pleasant to build.

This was also a great experience to test out the Pinata hub with a full end to end client that creates casts as well as renders them. Definitely check it out if you haven’t

I plan to open source the repo as well as write a blog post on how it was built soon! How much this is maintained will vary as it serves more as a demo, and would highly recommend Tiles by @brianjckim as a mature photo client. If anything I hope it inspired other clients to marry IPFS with Farcaster for media!

Before we get into anything else as you start trying this client out, please be aware that posts will take a while to show up on Warpcast as they’re trying to catch up on messages. There might be a delay of a few hours before you see something!

Quick PSA as people use this!! 

Photocaster uses your browser cookies to keep you logged in, if you happen to connect with a different browser or have some kind of cookie blocking enabled (e.g. ad blocker or incognito) then it will likely prompt you to sign in again.

Oh yikes lol. Let me get you back with those warps :) Did you have two different devices or just one?

It will let you add a message as well, but it just won’t display it on Photocaster in the feed. If you view the post on Warpcast it will have the message :)

If I understand correctly, casting on Photocaster will cast a better quality image, but with no message or caption, right?

I wish there was 😭 There are not many options at the moment when it comes to signing into another Farcaster client. Its something we want to tackle more in depth as we build out Farcaster services at Pinata :)

No plans to build native apps at the moment! Hoping a more dedicated team will take the reigns on a native photography focused client (and that they take the IPFS approach :) )

Sorry to hear that :( Signing in with Warpcast is still not the most stable. Could you try refreshing the page to see if that changes anything? That happened to work for me earlier

@stevedylandev.eth, I signed into Photocaster with Warpcast, paid with Warps, but when I try to cast a photo I am asked to sign in and pay again.  Same computer only 2 minutes apart.

Totally understandable 😅 Best way to think of it is like email. Farcaster is to email what Warpcast or Photocaster are to Gmail or Yahoo. They’re both clients that access the same network and information. If you post a photo in Photocaster, it will show up in Warpcast. The difference is the initial image quality!

Is this another client I should download, or running on top of Warpcast? Still wrapping my head around the Farcaster ecosystem..

Could you give me more info about what browser you're using? e.g. mobile or desktop? And if you have any cookie blocking enabled?

I tried signing in, but it keeps asking me in Warpcast to connect. Photocaster has two keys from me? I paid 130 warps and 80 warps, but when I click the + button, Photocaster asks me to sign in. Any ideas?
